Fourteen year old nerd-boy Dan Cereill is not quite coping with a reversal of family fortune, moving house, new school
hell, a mother with a failing wedding cake business, a just-out gay dad, and an impossible crush on Estelle, the girl next door. His life is a mess, but for now he’s narrowed it down to just six impossible things…
One of my favorite genres is
Dan, for all intent and purpose is a nerd. He’s skinny, really smart, and is not popular with the ladies. Now, I love myself a geek.
The other part that was a bit of a let down was the relationship between Dan and his crush, Estelle. I did not see the chemistry at all.
For not liking Dan much, he really grew on me towards the end of the story. I felt he grew and matured a lot. As a way to grow muscle, he took it upon himself to start running every day. In the end it helped pay off because he did stretch, and he was able to take on a bully. Had it not been some confidence growing I don’t think he would have been able to take on someone so huge. I also liked that Dan learned from his mistakes. When he knew something was wrong, he took initiative to make things right again.
Overall, this was a cute book. I did not hate it, but I couldn’t completely engross myself in it. This was not a book for me. I certainly would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone, though. If you’re in the mood for a fun book that deals with first love then I say give it a try.
